Desert Ridge opened its season with a 7-0 victory in a scrimmage against Williams Field. After taking on some early pressure, the boys settled into the game and began to find their groove. The Jaguars opened the scoring after a Cooper McDaniel corner kick was headed back in by Carter Nikolaus and then Lorenzo Mendoza knocked it down to Carter Wade who knocked it home. After some great hustle by Trey Holland, Carsen Burns hit a wonder strike from distance that found its way into the back corner of the goal. After another set piece, Tyler Theobald set up a Mack Eagleburger goal to give Desert Ridge a 3-0 advantage going into halftime.
In the second half, the Jags picked up where they left off when another Cooper McDaniel corner kick found Payton Gardner for another goal. Just minutes later, freshman Lorenzo Mendoza opened his high school scoring account with a goal assisted by Carter Wade. With the game starting to wind down, Pat Aguilar played a perfect corner in to Nate Shaw who headed it home. Finally, late in the game, Carter Nikolaus hit a great free kick from distance to make the final score 7-0.
In the end, Desert Ridge executed well on set pieces, scoring 5 of their 7 goals on restarts. The defense did well staying organized and managed to earn the shutout. The Jaguars will now turn their attention to their first regular season game of the year just a week away on Tuesday, November 27th against Mountain View. The boys will follow that up hosting the Stephan Hopp/Anthony Solis Cactus Cup Soccer Tournament November 29th-December 1st.
