The Desert Ridge Varsity Boys Soccer team opened their season with a dominating 4-0 win over Mountain View on Tuesday night. The boys came out fast, scoring all four goals in the first half of the game. The Jaguars opened the scoring early when Mark Gomez played a perfectly weighted ball down the wing for Lorenzo Mendoza who took it down the line and played it into the middle where Carter Wade hammered him. Just minutes later, a Cooper McDaniel corner kick ended up at the feet of Mark Gomez who buried it into the back of the net. Still in the first half, the Jags made it 3-0 on another set piece that was flicked on by Carter Nikolaus to Carter Wade and was finished off by Mack Eagleburger. Still in the first half, Payton Gardner threw the ball into the box to Mark Gomez who flicked it on to Trey Holland for another goal.
A more balanced second half didn’t produce anymore goals with the game ending at 4-0. Goalkeeper Luke Buehler and the Jags displayed a strong team defensive effort in recording the shutout.
Desert Ridge will now look to defending 3A State Champions Yuma Catholic on Thursday night at 6:30pm on their home field to open up the 2018 DRHS Stephan Hopp/Anthony Solis Cactus Cup Soccer Tournament. The boys will then play two games on Friday at 11am and 3pm so come check out this exciting team as they begin their season.
