Desert Ridge hosted a tough Maryvale squad on Thursday night. Two overtimes and 100 minutes of play were not enough to separate the teams or even produce a goal as the game ended 0-0. Desert Ridge looked destined to score as they were able to get in behind the Maryvale defense three times in the first half but were unable to convert on those chances. Maryvale pushed back but the Desert Ridge defense was up to the task. The back line stayed organized and played together to earn their 5th shutout in 8 games this season. The Desert Ridge defense was led by Branson DeWitt, Payton Gardner, Keith Renteria, Carter Nikolaus, and Tyler Theobald.
In the second half, Desert Ridge looked to have finally broken the deadlock when Xander Witthus hammered the ball home but the goal was disallowed when the referee ruled him offside. Both teams continued to push but the goalkeepers stood tall. Eddie Aguilar played the full 80 minutes of regulation and recorded 10 saves on his way to another shutout. However, Eddie picked up an injury and had to leave the game for the overtimes. Coming off the bench, Luke Buehler was forced into action and came up clutch with a couple of big time saves to preserve the shutout for the Jaguars.
While the boys were disappointed not to get the win, it was a very strong team performance against a quality Maryvale side. The boys are now 4-2-2 on the season and have outscored their opponents 24-7 in those games. At 1-1-1 in conference play, the boys will travel to San Luis next Tuesday and then come back home that Friday for a big game against Red Mountain.
