Desert Ridge Boys Soccer got their first win of the young season with a 5-0 win over Mesquite Tuesday night. Despite playing a double OT game the night before, the Jags came out with high energy scoring in the games first ten minutes. Defender Keith Renteria made a great run from the back through the Mesquite back line running onto and scoring a great ball over the top from Mark Gomez. Keith’s first Varsity goal proved to be the game winner. Nikola Serdar added to the total a short time later from another great Mark Gomez assist.
Up 2-0 going into the second half, Mark Gomez scored a goal of his own to give Desert Ridge a comfortable 3-0 lead. Matt Shaw provided the assist just minutes into the second half. Matt Shaw tucked away an Ed Ortega through ball to move the lead to 4-0. Desert Ridge capped off a strong performance when Zach Harris sent a ball through for Erick Gamez. Gamez scored the final goal of the game to give the Jags a 5-0 win. The goal was his first at the Varsity level.
A solid team performance from the Jaguars, the defense did an excellent job containing Mesquite’s dangerous attack. It only his second Varsity start, Eddie Aguilar played the entire game in goal collecting his first career Varsity shutout. It was a great defensive effort from the Jags highlighted by the play of Branson DeWitt, Keith Renteria, Payton Gardner, Carter Nikolaus, and Tyler Theobald.
At 1-1 overall, Desert Ridge will host the 22-team DRHS Stephan Hopp/Anthony Solis Cactus Cup Soccer Tournament starting on Thursday, November 30th. The boys will take on Poston Butte at 6:30pm on the main field in their first game of the tournament.
