Jaguars News · Ridge Wrestling Reps well at State!!!!

The Jaguar wrestling team wrapped up the season last week at the Div 1 State Championships in Prescott.  The team had a great showing – finishing in 7th place with 87 Points and 5 State Placers.  Dante Smith lead the team with a State Runner-up finish in the heavyweight division. Joe Kisting wrestled out of his mind this weekend and ended up finishing in 4th place in the 145 division.  Porter Ray ended with 3 year varsity career with over a 100 wins, a section championship and finally a 5th place finish at State in the 113 Division.  Gabe Corrales became the second Desert Ridge freshmen to ever place at state and had the highest finish ever for a Desert Ridge freshmen taking 5th Place at 120.   And finally, Keaton Steck battled through injuries to get on the podium finishing in 6th place (170 class) on one leg and a bad collar bone.

As  a team 9 of the 10 wrestlers who made the State Championships won at least one match!  Akai Villela and Hayden Minarchin came up just short of placing in the top six as both lost very close “blood round” matches.

As a team this year, the squad had an overall fantastic season with a 20-7 dual record, a team title at the Coyote Open, a Runner-up finishes at the Spartan Invitational in Las Vegas, NV and Sectionals, a 3rd place finish at the Brad Jones Pack Invitational and a 5th place finish at the Southwest Shootout duals in Rio Rancho, NM. Congratulations to the entire team and to Head Coach Travis Jackson, and his assistants Aaron Decker, Tommy Orlowski, and Gary Smith Jr.  We are very proud of you and all you accomplished this season! Go Jags!
