Desert Ridge High School
The Desert Ridge Varsity Boys Soccer team kicked their season off on Monday night against Basha High School. The two teams have played some big games over the years and have never been separated by more than a goal. Desert Ridge came out strong and battled hard against a strong Basha side. Twenty minutes into the game, Desert Ridge forced a long throw opportunity deep in the Basha end. Kendall L’Heureux launched the ball towards the near post where Matt Shaw and Tanis Davis both challenged for it. Matt Shaw headed the ball into the back of the net to give the Jaguars a 1-0 advantage. The boys appeared destined to take that lead into halftime but with just two minutes left in the half, an errant shot found its way to the feet of a Basha forward who hit a perfect shot to the back side netting to level the score at 1-1.
The second half saw both teams fighting it out with much of the play being dominated in the middle of the field. A few opportunities here and there were highlighted with just three minutes remaining when freshman forward Nikola Serdar won a ball in the opponents end. He turned quickly and released the ball to midfielder Erick Gamez whose shot struck the post and came back into play only to land right in the goalkeepers arms. With about one minute left, Desert Ridge committed a foul in their own end. Basha played the ball quickly wide, the oncoming midfielder then played the ball across to the back post where it was headed home for the winner with just 52 seconds left on the clock.
It was a heart breaking loss for the Jaguars who until that last minute thought they would at least be leaving with a draw.
